Fluid Power Action Challenge 2017

At Daman, we strongly believe in improving the future of our children by cultivating leadership and innovation within our education systems. Studies show that competitiveness of the US is linked closely to the success of our youth in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

In efforts to improve the capacity and diversity of the STEM workforce pipeline, Daman has been sponsoring the NFPA Fluid Power Action Challenge each year since 2010. Hundreds of seventh and eighth graders from the area participate in this hands-on challenge where they design and build machines used in real-world applications.

The challenge provides students the opportunity to experience mechanical and hydraulic engineering concepts; requiring them to use time management skills, project planning, resource management, teamwork, testing, and exploration.

THE TEAM CHALLENGE

Past teams report it is the hardest thing they have done in school and loved it! With minimal coaching, we give teams of 4 students a package containing wood, paper, glue, tubing, and syringes, and send them off to design and build this year's challenge machine.

THE COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Each year, the participation levels of students and schools increase. Last year we had 148 students who comprised 37 teams. The following schools joined in the event: South Bend Community Schools, Mishawaka, John Young, and the Career Academy of South Bend.

THE ASK

We can't do it alone. Donations in any amount are very much appreciated. $250 supports a team of 4 kids. Our goal is to raise $10,000, which will support 40 teams of students. Last year we ran 37 teams.

Please consider supporting this worthy event and join us at the Challenge Workshop Days and the Challenge Day. Once you see the powerful impact of this program, you will be amazed by the students' abilities to grasp the fundamentals of fluid power in action.
